19 Turnitin and Grammarly for Proofreading
Grammarly is a cloud-based typing assistant that reviews spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, engagement, and delivery mistakes. It uses artificial intelligence to identify potential issues with spelling, grammar, punctuation, readability and vocabulary and suggests corrections to help you edit your written work.
The ethical use of Generative AI will apply to all students including those at thesis level. Grammarly is based on AI tech so is part of the complex academic writing and AI conversation. Using Turnitin will help as with any information source to identify where academic writing needs improvement.
It is your job to use Grammarly responsibly and decide whether the suggestions from platforms such as Grammarly or Turnitin are appropriate and to edit your work thoroughly to identify any other issues Grammarly may have missed. Your editing decisions should always be based on following your assessment task instructions and marking rubric, and your own knowledge of academic writing rules and expectations.
Free access
Whilst Grammarly premium is available to purchase on subscription, you can access some functionality with a free account.
Tip – the free version of Grammarly also uses Generative AI to rewrite and edit your work. If you use big chunks of text advice this will be picked up by Turnitin and could be interpreted as plagiarism. Anyone who uses Grammarly needs to use ethical and responsibly like any Generative AI platform or information source.
