Identifying Creative Commons and Copyright material

Publicly available CC licence materials may have different restrictions placed on their reuse. Before you use any material, you must identify if it is copyright protected. Check the terms of use to see if you are able to reuse the copyright material in an open textbook.

If the licence of the content you want to use conflicts with the licence of your textbook, you may need to find alternatives or create new content.

Creative Commons licensed material use

When reusing content in the textbook, use only content that is licensed:

  • No rights reserved – use this content without attribution.

  • CC BY – Use and adapt this material. Provide an attribution.
  • CC BY-ND – Use this, but do not change it or create derivatives. Use the content as it is and provide attribution.
  • CC BY-NC – Use and adapt this content and provide attribution.
  • CC BY-NC-ND – Do not change this material or create derivatives. Use the content as it is and provide attribution. It is only available for use in non-commercial formats, so is allowable in your textbook.

Record the permissions, CC licence, source and owner of all materials that are used in the text.
